LTB
I filed an application with the Landlord and Tenant Board by fax, just before power to my unit was disconnected, on Thursday, February 6. The fax number for the St Clair / Toronto South office is 416-326-9838 and I obtained it from their Office Locations page. On February 12, the St Clair (Toronto South District) office processed my application and issued file number TST-49321-14 (attached below) with a hearing date of March 19. The Board faxed me the application, but only the first 10 pages went through; that is why I picked up the documents in person and served it on the Landlord (in their mailbox), then filed an affidavit of service on the same day. I have filed together with my original application the 2014.01.15 letter, the 2014.02.04 letter, as well as the contract papers.
According to its welcome page,
The Landlord and Tenant Board’s role is to provide information about the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA) and to resolve disputes between most residential landlords and tenants.
On January 25th, 2011, our Board became part of the newly designated social justice tribunals cluster. This second cluster brings together our Board and six other important adjudicative tribunals – Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, Social Benefits Tribunal, Custody Review Board, Child and Family Services Review Board and Special Education Tribunal (English) and Special Education Tribunal (French). The mandate of these tribunals is to provide all Ontarians with timely access to specialized, expert and effective dispute resolution in a wide range of matters that profoundly affect their everyday lives.
The cluster is led by Executive Chair Michael Gottheil. The former Chairs of the seven adjudicative tribunals were re-designated as Associate Chairs. You may find more information about the Executive Chair, the social justice tribunals cluster, its structure and access to the other tribunals at www.sjto.gov.on.ca.
As of January 1, 2010, the Landlord and Tenant Board’s monetary jurisdiction has increased from $10,000 to $25,000. The maximum amount that the Board can order paid to a party, or order as an administrative fine, is now $25,000.
The LTB allows you to check the status of your application online and also provides an invaluable list of selected decisions.
I have listed below, as subpages, the events that led to the application.
