Apart from libel and defamation frivolous lawsuits, another tool traditionally used by individuals in a position of power with something to hide to silence dissent, debate and critical discourse was intellectual property legislation. Although Canadian legislation provides significant protections under fair dealing, (called fair use in USA), there are many those who believe that despite the 2004 Supreme Court of Canada decision in CCH Canadian Ltd. v. Law Society of Upper Canada, nothing much has changed.

For example, I noticed that not long after quoting the CEWC archive, a limitation notice appeared on the website:

Jack Steinman CEWC copyright notice

While the provider of content has every right to limit access to its content, it is also my right, guaranteed by the fair dealing exception, to quote said content.

Though I may license the original work on this site under Creative Commons, that is a decision I will take once the site is complete - right now, it is work in progress.
